Congratulations to the Big Red Express Cross Country Team who continued their outstanding tradition of excellence by capturing the GCL, DISTRICT AND CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS while advancing to the State Championship for the 17th time as a team this fall. The Big Red Express has advanced to the State Championship 8 times since 2000, which is the most State appearances by a team on the boys' Division I level in Ohio. The Lancers finished 15th overall. The team was led by a talented group of underclassman in sophomore Travis Hawes who captured the individual crown at the GCL Championships giving the Lancers their 15th Individual Champion, the most in the League since 1991. Travis becomes the first Lancer since Doug Bockenstette '91 to win the GCL crown as a sophomore and was also named GCL Runner of the Year. Coach Frank Russo was named GCL Coach of the Year for the 9th time in his career. Leading up to the championship season, the Big Red Express was on the road and traveled to some of the top meets in the Midwest. The team traveled to Michigan State University which hosted most of the "Top 10" teams from Michigan. The Lancers finished 4th in the Nike Championship race. The team also traveled to Columbus several times where they competed against the top teams in Ohio in the Midwest Meet of Champions and Central Ohio's most traditional and prestigious invitational, the Les Eisenhart - Thomas Worthington Invitational. The Lancers captured team titles at Wilmington College - Finishtiming.com Invitational , the Greenville Treaty Invitational and the Springboro Invitational. The Big Red Express returns 6 of their top 7 going into next year and will be joined by a group of talented freshman who won the GCL Crown. Returning to lead the Lancers in '09 will be sophomores Travis Hawes and Ethan Bokeno who received 1st team All GCL and ALL Southwest Regional Honors, along with sophomores Alex Thiery and Kevin Kluesner, junior Ike Placke and freshmen Clayton Cardinal, Drew Michel, Matt Schroeck, and Marc Nie. The Lancers goal next fall will be to contend for the State Crown which includes back to back State Titles in 2005 and 2006, along with 5 State Runner up titles in '86, 00, '01,'02, '04.
